An island of contrasts that fascinates everyone!

Gran Canaria – an island of contrasts that fascinates everyone! It lies just 150 kilometres west of Morocco, at the same latitude as the Sahara. But don’t be fooled – although there are sandy beaches and dunes to the south, this is far from a desert. The island impresses with its incredibly varied landscapes: from raw volcanic barrenness to lush green, fertile areas where nature shows its full force.

If you’re a fan of climbing on a bike, you’ll find your paradise here. Gran Canaria may not be home to the biggest or most famous climbs, but you won’t be short of challenges on the rugged terrain. Every turn, every climb brings new views that will make your heart beat faster – with the exhilaration and sheer beauty of nature.

Day 1, 17 February 2025

Transfer to your flight to Gran Canaria!

One last day at work, luggage preparation and in the evening we will depart from our classic boarding points in Maribor, Celje and Ljubljana for Bergamo airport in Italy. We will travel to the airport in our vehicles and an enclosed BOX bike trailer, which will allow the safe transport of bikes to the airport for all those who decide to go to Gran Canaria with their bikes.

Day 2, 18 February 2025

Welcome to Gran Canario!

The transfer to the airport is over. We will check our luggage at the airport and at 5:50 we will fly to Gran Canaria. We are scheduled to land on the island at 9:30. At the airport we will pick up our luggage, bikes, rented escort vehicles, transfer to our hotel in Playa del Ingles and have a well-deserved lunch once we arrive at the hotel. We will use the afternoon to assemble our bikes, collect our rental bikes, walk to the Dunas de Maspalos Nature Reserve and, if desired, take a preliminary lap of Gran Canaria before the evening.

After a long day on the road, we’ll have dinner at one of the local restaurants and take a stroll through probably the most touristy part of Gran Canaria – Playa del Ingles.

Day 3, 19 February 2025

First serious tour on the Island of Eternal Spring!

Our 10-day Gran Canaria cycling adventure will start in Maspalomas, where we will start the day with something other than a hotel breakfast. Shortly after leaving town, we’ll start our climb to Alto de Fataga, where the road will take us through a dry landscape with palm trees and views of the valleys that will not leave us indifferent!

After a short descent, we will make another climb past the town of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where you will have a must-stop refreshment stop, while you can see the typical Canarian houses. We will then descend to Santa Lucío de Tirajana, from where we will continue along the winding road towards Agüimes. Along the way, we will be accompanied by serpentine bends and sweeping views of the surrounding hills.

The last part of the tour will be flat, from Vecindaria back to the starting point in Maspalomas, where we will finish our first day on the bike.

Upon arrival at the hotel, the rest of the afternoon is free. You can use it to stroll around the town, the dunes, jump in the sea or enjoy the hotel pool. We will finish the day with dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Day 4, 20 February 2025

Fresh mango juice and the legendary climbs of Gran Canaria!

The third day of your Gran Canaria cycling adventure will offer unforgettable views and challenging climbs. From Maspalomas, we will cycle along the coast towards Santa Agueda, where the route will start to climb gently towards the climb to Soria. The road winds past terraced plantations and cliffs, with the Atlantic Ocean glistening in the background. At the top, we’ll enjoy a local speciality at the bar – freshly squeezed mango juice, a real reward for the kilometres. We’ll continue on to Barranquilla Andres, where we’ll tackle the steepest part of the climb. Your heart will start to race, but the views of deep gorges and distant peaks will soften the effort. Then we’ll experience one of the most spectacular descents on the island, where the road winds like a snake towards the seaside town of Mogan. Numerous sharp bends, rocky cliffs and views of the blue sea will make the experience unique.

In the seaside town of Mogan, you will have a refreshment stop with sweet and salty snacks to recharge your batteries for the next climb. The route will take us towards Veneguera, where the road will turn up again, but you will be rewarded with views of the wild landscape and the famous rock formations of Los Azulejos de Veneguera. Here, the rocks shimmer in shades of blue and green, adding a touch of natural beauty to our day.

The descent past these picturesque rocks will lead us to our final destination in La Aldea de San Nicolás de Tolentino, where we will finish our cycling. The rest of the afternoon is free, with the opportunity to refresh yourself at the hotel complex’s swimming pool and have dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Day 5, 21 February 2025

Tamadaba Nature Park

The fourth day of the Gran Canaria cycling tour will take us into the heart of the beautiful Tamadaba Natural Park. After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll set off from the village of San Nicolás on a scenic route that winds along the steep cliffs of the west coast. Our first stop will be at the spectacular Mirador del Balcón lookout point, where we will enjoy views of dramatic rock formations and the waves of the Atlantic crashing against the steep cliffs below.

Due to a rock fall, we will have to continue through a lighted tunnel that will take us deeper into the nature park. After exiting the tunnel, a winding, narrow road will lead us through a typical volcanic landscape with views of the Atlantic towards the town of Agaete. There, the grey and arid environment will slowly give way to the lush greenery of the northern part of Gran Canaria. The undulating road will lead us through plantations of banana and mango trees until we start the next challenging climb.

We will climb towards Mirador Los Garajes, which is at 1470 metres. The steep road and serpentine climbs will test your legs, but the view of the green plateaus and the deep blue sea in the distance will be unforgettable. At the top, we will breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the magnificent panoramas.

There will be a long and winding descent past the small town of Artenara, where traditional white houses and cliffs will adorn the view. The cycling tour will end with a return to San Nicolás. Another afternoon at the pool and another dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 6, 22 February 2025

The Valley of Tears and the climb to the highest road on the island!

Day 5 of the cycling journey will be a real test of strength and endurance, taking us on the toughest stage before a well-deserved rest. We will start in the village of San Nicolás, where we will reverse the previous day’s route and head towards the Tejeda water reservoir. There we will start the legendary climb to the Valley of Tears, so called by cyclists for a reason – a 10.5 kilometre long steep climb that will bring us 970 vertical metres of ascent. From the first metres onwards, we will feel the weight of the challenge, but every turn will bring a sense of achievement and a proximity to the summit.

A well-deserved refreshment stop will be waiting for us at the top to replenish our energy reserves. After a short descent, a new challenge will follow – the climb to the highest peak in Gran Canaria, Pico de Las Nieves, which rises 1,949 metres above sea level. If the weather cooperates, we’ll be able to admire the magnificent views of the Atlantic from the top and even see Mount Teide on neighbouring Tenerife. Photography will be compulsory – to commemorate the summit and the highest point of our cycling journey.
Then we will start the long and technically demanding descent to the north of the island, where short climbs will test our tired legs. We will finish our cycling by the sea in Sardina del Norte. Congratulations! We will have conquered the hardest stage and truly deserve a day of rest.

Day 7, 23 February 2025

Rest day and recovery ride

The sixth day will be devoted to a well-deserved recovery as our journey slowly moves into the second half. After a hotel breakfast, it will be time for a relaxing drive or a rest. For those who want to gently stretch their legs, you will be able to embark on a 30-kilometre recovery ride, which will include a compulsory coffee stop at one of the local cafés. The pace will be leisurely and the road will offer beautiful views of the north coast.

For the more adventurous, there is also the option of swimming in Piscinas Roque Prieto, an artificial seawater pool where fresh water from the Atlantic is constantly being replenished. A refreshing swim in the crystal clear water will be the perfect way to relax your muscles after the exertions of the past. Alternatively, you can spend the day at the hotel complex’s swimming pool, where you’ll have the peace and comfort to fully regenerate.

In the afternoon, if you wish, we will organise an excursion with our escort vehicles to the capital Las Palmas. There we can explore the lively streets of the city, stroll along the famous Las Canteras beach or visit the cultural sites.

We’ll finish the day with dinner at a local restaurant, where we’ll enjoy traditional Canarian cuisine and recharge our batteries for the rest of the cycling adventure.

Day 8, 24 February 2025

A circular drive in the north of Gran Canaria

After a successful recovery, our cycling journey will move into the second half. Day 6 will take us on a circular ride through the green northern part of the island. We will start in Sardina del Norte, where the route will immediately take us into a rugged landscape with climbs and descents to wake up our legs.

The opening 40 kilometres will offer varied views of the northern part of the island, where lush vegetation, terraced plantations and villages with traditional houses create a true idyll. After this eventful stage, we will arrive in the village of Teror, famous for its cobbled streets and beautiful basilica. From here, the climb will begin in earnest towards the Mirador Astronomico de Pinos de Gáldar, which lies at an altitude of 1,545 metres.

The climb will be long and challenging, with sharp switchbacks, but every turn will bring new views of green valleys and the distant Atlantic Ocean. After 61 kilometres, we will reach the summit, where we will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the northern coast and the island’s forested interior. Here we will also be able to admire the starry sky, as Mirador is known as one of the best places for stargazing.

From here, we will descend 35 kilometres back to Sardina del Norte, where we will end the day with dinner in a local restaurant, full of good impressions and new memories.

Day 9, 25 February 2025

Return to the south of the island

Day 8. Hotel breakfast, luggage in the escort vehicle and hop on the bike. The route will head towards our starting point as we head back towards Maspalomas from the north of the island. The start of the stage will be full of challenges, as we will first start the climb to the highest peak of Gran Canaria, Pico de las Nieves. The road will be steep and winding, gaining altitude with every kilometre, which will be rewarded with a sense of achievement as we reach the highest point of the island, at 1949 metres above sea level.

Pico de las Nieves is not only a popular cycling destination, but also an important historical and geographical point. On top of the hill is a military radar station which, thanks to its strategic location, controls the island’s airspace. The mountain is also known for the rare pine forests that cover the slopes and are home to many endemic plant species typical of the Canary Islands. Nearby is the Roque Nublo Natural Monument, a mighty volcanic rock that is one of the island’s symbols.

After a short stop at the summit, where we can enjoy the cooler climate, which occasionally brings snow, which gave the mountain its name “Snegov vrh”, we will continue our journey into the valley. We will pass the Barranco de la Madre del Agua dam, where we will be accompanied by pine forests and picturesque gorges.
We will continue towards the town of Ingenio, where we will get a taste of authentic Canarian culture, with its narrow streets and local cafés. The last part of the stage will be a bit flatter as we cycle to Vecindaria, where we will finish the day with dinner in one of the local restaurants.

Day 10, 26 February 2025

Revial ride to the return to Maspalomas

The last real cycling day in Gran Canaria is upon us, and it will be the end of our journey around the island in style. After a hotel breakfast, we’ll head uphill from Vecindaria to Santa Lucia de Tirajana, where climbs will take us towards the highest peaks of the island.

For those who still feel energetic, there is the option of an extension to the well-known Pico de las Nieves, where you will be able to climb Gran Canaria’s highest point one last time. For the rest of us, we will continue towards the climb/descent of Sorio, which you will recognise from the first day of our trip. This will be the end of the hardest climbs of the day, as after 37 kilometres the steep gradients will be mostly behind us.

From there it will be rugged terrain with constant ups and downs, which can be described as a cycling “seesaw”: down up, down down up, down down down up, down down down. The road will take us through picturesque valleys and mountains before we reach the last long descent.

Our tour will end in Maspalomas, where we will return to the starting point of our cycling trip. Ending up by the sea will be the perfect moment to relax and enjoy the end of an unforgettable adventure that has taken us through some of the most scenic and challenging routes of Gran Canaria.
