Cycling Experience of the Year: views, climbs and passes of Switzerland

Experience an unforgettable cycling adventure through the Swiss Alps, where famous passes such as the Lukmanier, Grimsel, Furka and Gotthard await you. On this five-day journey, you’ll cycle through stunning landscapes, from green valleys to snow-capped peaks, accompanied by a vehicle that will take care of your gear and refreshments.

Every day will bring new challenges and beautiful views. During the ride, you’ll tackle passes with altitudes of over 2000 metres, like the Furka Pass made famous in Goldfinger. After the gruelling stages, you’ll relax in cosy hotels with great cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere.

The trip combines a sporting challenge with the enjoyment of unspoilt nature. Whatever your cycling level, this experience will be the perfect combination of spectacular views, endurance tests and a relaxed exploration of the Swiss Alps.

Day 1, 11 June 2025

Transfer to Switzerland and the first serious climbs!

We will start the day early, heading for Italy just a few hours after midnight from Celje and Ljubljana. The drive will take us through the Po Valley to Milan, where we will turn north and enter Switzerland. The plains will gradually give way to hills, which will soon turn into majestic mountains. Our destination will be the mountain village of Olivone, where we will unload our bikes and start our cycling adventure through Switzerland.

The first challenge will be to climb the Lukmanier Pass, which rises to 1915 metres above sea level, and then we will climb our first two-thousand-metre peak – the 2044-metre Oberalppass. As challenging as it sounds, the reward is a descent into the valley to reach our “base” in picturesque Andermatt. Here we have a hotel booked, with double rooms and private bathrooms. Our stay also includes a very varied and rich breakfast. The hotel also has a closed and secure bike storage room.

The afternoon will be spent relaxing and exploring the city, and the day will end with dinner at a local restaurant to recharge your batteries for the next days of unforgettable adventures.

Day 2, 12 June 2025

Creme de la Creme

With 119 kilometres and 3700 metres of climbing, you’re in for a challenging day. But don’t worry! A support vehicle will always be with you – for refreshments in the toughest moments or a comfortable seat when you’re exhausted. Even if you decide to take a break in the van, you’ll have pleasant company and no judgement.

The stage includes three passes: the Susten Pass, the Grimsel Pass and the Furka Pass. The first objective, Susten Pass, lies at 2260 metres above sea level and will be a great warm-up for the rest of the race. After the descent, the route will take you past stunning reservoir lakes to the 2165 metre Grimsel Pass, where an escort vehicle will be waiting for you to change and recharge your batteries. The last challenge will be the 2429 metre high Furka Pass, famous from the movie Goldfinger. The iconic Belvedere Hotel, now closed, remains a popular postcard motif, and the views along the way will undoubtedly make the last serpentine climb a little easier.

The stage is tough, but it is not a competition – we encourage you to enjoy cycling and the beautiful views. Remember, an experience like this could be the chance of a lifetime!

Day 3, 13 June 2025

Lake Lucerne, Pragelpass and Klausenpass

The third day of cycling in Switzerland brings new challenges and beautiful views. After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll load the bikes onto the escort vehicle and head towards Lake Lucerne. Depending on your tiredness, you will be able to choose between two routes: the less tired will tackle two passes, while others will prefer to enjoy a coffee and panoramic views at the top of the first pass, while the “more die-hard” cyclists are waiting.

First up will be the Pragel Pass at 1548 metres, famous for its steep 7 kilometres where the gradient never drops below 11%, followed by the slightly gentler but higher Klausen Pass at 1948 metres above sea level. After the climb and replenishing your energy reserves at the top, you will descend back to Lake Lucerne. There you can enjoy a walk along the shore or a short break before returning to Andermatt in the escort vehicle.

For the shorter route, you’ll cover 89 kilometres and climb 1,720 metres – just enough to keep your energy up for the last days of adventure!

Day 4, 14 June 2025

3x1000 metres = 3000 vertical metres of ascent

On your fourth day in Switzerland, you will face another tough cycling challenge. You’ll start the day with a morning climb up to the Furka Pass, where you’ll tackle the initial 1000 metres of elevation gain. This will be followed by a descent and then 1450 vertical metres of ascent to the impressive 2478 metre high Nufenen Pass. As always, you will be met at the top by an escort vehicle, where you can freshen up, change and prepare for the long descent into the valley.

After the descent, you’ll have the chance to put away your extra clothes, fill your pockets with energy snacks and start the last climb of the day – the 1,000 metres up to the 2,106-metre Gotthard Pass. Along the way, you’ll negotiate the cobbled serpentines that are the real speciality of this pass. After a successful climb, you only have to descend 10 kilometres back to Andermatt.

For the most persistent, the day will bring 105 kilometres and 3,160 metres of elevation gain – certainly enough climbing to relax and enjoy a well-deserved rest in the evening with a sense of achievement!

Day 5, 15 June 2025

One last time at Gotthard Pass

After breakfast in the morning, it will be time to say goodbye to Switzerland. We’ll load your luggage into the escort vehicle and you’ll set off on the ultimate cycling challenge – the climb up the Gotthard Pass from Andermatt. Although you’ll already know the road from the descent on Day 4, the climb up this famous pass will be the perfect opportunity to add another tick to your list of 2,000 metres conquered.

At the top of the pass, you will have some time to buy souvenirs and enjoy the last views of the Swiss mountains. In the meantime, we will take care of loading the bikes onto the escort vehicle. We will then leave Switzerland and set off for Slovenia at 12 noon.

Map of the entire journey

What is the weather like in Switzerland in June?

Expect variable weather, with moderate temperatures in the valleys (15-25 °C) and cooler conditions at higher passes (5-15 °C), occasional showers and stronger winds, especially at the passes. Snow on roads is rare but not excluded at higher altitudes.

What about in case of bad weather?

In case of bad weather, we adapt the activities to the weather forecast, prepare an alternative route or, in the worst case, move to the next hotel with an escort vehicle.
