Alpe Adria – From the Alps to the Adriatic!

The Alpe Adria Route takes you from the medieval, music-filled city of Salzburg, through the green valleys of Carinthia and the scenic landscapes of Friuli Venezia Giulia, all the way to the sunny Adriatic coast in Grado. Along the way, we’ll ride a historic railway through an Alpine tunnel that connects the north and south of Europe — once a true engineering marvel, and today an unforgettable shortcut between two worlds.

On the bike, we’ll travel through the stories of three countries — Austria, Slovenia, and Italy — experiencing their nature, culture, and local cuisine along the way. This is a journey where the Alps slowly give way to the sea, and every day feels like a fresh start.

On average, we’ll ride 81 km per day with 878 meters of elevation gain.

Day 1

Welcome to Austria!

Your cycling adventure begins in Salzburg — and we’ll make sure everything is smooth, simple, and stress-free from the moment you arrive. We’ll pick you up at Salzburg Airport at 12:00 PM, then take a short transfer to our hotel, where we’ll check in and get settled.

Once we’re in, we’ll take care of the essentials: bike setup, gear checks, and final adjustments, so everything feels perfectly dialed in for the days ahead.

In the afternoon, we’ll head out to explore Salzburg and its famous sights at a relaxed pace — the perfect way to ease into the trip and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful Alpine city.

In the evening, we’ll come together for a group dinner, where we’ll enjoy great local food, get to know each other, and go over the route plan — so everyone feels confident, excited, and ready to ride.

Day 2 - Cycling from Salzburg to Bischofshofen

The Perfect First Ride!

After breakfast, we’ll get ready, hop on the bikes, and roll out for our first day on the Alpe Adria Route.

The ride winds through orchards and past old saltworks — quiet reminders of the wealth that helped Salzburg grow into the city it is today. We’ll pass through Hallein, a charming town with a beautiful medieval center, before the views begin to open up toward the mountains.

Soon, the massive limestone walls of the Tennengebirge rise above us — a dramatic karst mountain range known for steep cliffs and high plateaus, marking our true entrance into the Alps.

Before long, you’ll spot Hohenwerfen Castle in the distance — one of Austria’s most impressive fortresses, perched high on a rocky ridge like a true guardian of the valley.

The final kilometers into Bischofshofen follow the river along a route once used by traders and pilgrims. We’ll wrap up the day with a great local dinner — and that first feeling that this trip is going to be something special.

Day 3 - Cycling from Bischofshofen to Spital an der Drau

Gorges and Hot Springs!

From Bischofshofen, we continue along the Alpe Adria Route through the stunning Salzach River Valley. This section is all about classic Alpine scenery — towering rock walls, hanging bridges, and dramatic peaks rising straight above the river.

As we pass Sankt Johann im Pongau, the route brings us close to Liechtensteinklamm Gorge, one of the deepest and narrowest gorges in the Alps. If you’d like, we can make a quick stop here — walking along the wooden pathways between massive 300-meter cliffs is an absolutely unforgettable experience.

Next, we ride into the Gastein Valley, where the spa town of Bad Hofgastein sits perfectly framed by the surrounding mountains. In Böckstein, we’ll hop on a train that takes us through a high-Alpine tunnel and straight into Mallnitz — once a remote mountain valley, and today a true gateway to the high Alps.

From there, it’s time for one of the best parts of the day: a long, smooth descent down the Möll River Valley, all the way to Spittal an der Drau, where the Alps begin to soften and open into the beautiful landscapes of Carinthia.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Liechtensteinklamm Gorge – A breathtaking gorge with wooden walkways carved into the rock, surrounded by towering cliffs and rushing water.
  • Bad Hofgastein – A classic Austrian spa town known for its thermal waters, mountain views, and relaxed Alpine atmosphere.

Day 4 - Cycling from Spittal an der Drau to Tarvisio

Alpine Elegance Meets Espresso Vibes!

From Spittal an der Drau, we follow the beautiful Drava River Valley, rolling through wide-open scenery and smooth cycling paths. Before long, we reach lively Villach — a town known for its thermal springs, historic trade routes, and vibrant energy.

Villach’s charming old town is crowned by St. Jakob’s Church, with its tall bell tower watching over the streets, squares, and bridges across the river. It’s the perfect place to pause and soak in that unique mix of Alpine charm and a hint of the south.

From here, we continue riding south, with the Karawanks mountains rising beside us as Austria slowly fades behind. Just a few more kilometers — and we’re in Tarvisio, where the smell of Italian espresso, buzzing town squares, and that warmer southern atmosphere welcome us instantly.

This is the stage where the Alps begin to give way to the Mediterranean — and you can feel it in every pedal stroke.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Villach – A lively riverside town with a beautiful old center, thermal spa culture, and classic Austrian charm.
  • Tarvisio – A mountain town right on the border, where Alpine scenery meets Italian lifestyle — coffee, piazzas, and a true “we made it to Italy” feeling.

Day 5 - Cycling from Travisio to Udine

Tunnels, Bridges & a Taste of Italy!

From Alpine Tarvisio, we drop down along a former railway line that now feels like a dream cycling route — flowing through tunnels, over bridges, and past dramatic canyons as it follows the Fella River. This is a ride built for pure enjoyment, tracing the historic corridor that once connected the north and south — the Alps and the Mediterranean.

In the medieval town of Venzone, rebuilt stone by stone after a major earthquake in the 1970s, history and nature blend together in a way that feels truly unique. This is where you really start to feel the soul of Friuli.

We continue through the Natura 2000 protected area near Osoppo, where the landscape slowly shifts — the rugged Alps soften into rolling hills and the warmer tones of the Friulian plains.

The final kilometers take us past Tomba and into Tavagnacco (Udine area), a lively Friulian town with a strong Venetian feel. To end the day the right way, we’ll enjoy a relaxed evening walk and finish with a well-earned dinner — the perfect Italian-style reward after another unforgettable stage.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Tomba & Tavagnacco (Udine area) – A beautiful slice of Friuli where Alpine landscapes transition into the Italian lowlands, with local charm, great food, and that unmistakable northern-Italy atmosphere.

Day 6 - Cycling from Udine to Grado

One Last Ride!

Leaving Udine behind, we roll out from the morning city buzz and into the peaceful open landscapes of the Friulian plains.

Before long, we reach the stunning town of Palmanova — a perfectly symmetrical Renaissance city shaped like a nine-pointed star, and one of the greatest urban masterpieces of the Venetian Republic. Seeing its design (especially from above) is absolutely incredible.

From here, the route gently descends toward the coast, and you can already feel the change in the air — warmer temperatures, softer light, and that first hint of the sea. The final kilometers take us along raised paths and through lagoon scenery as we arrive in Grado, where our journey from the Alps to the Adriatic comes to a perfect close with the sound of the waves.

In the afternoon and evening, we’ll enjoy our final dinner together and celebrate the trip the best way possible — with great food, great company, and a well-earned toast to an unforgettable ride.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Palmanova – A unique star-shaped Renaissance fortress town and one of Italy’s most impressive examples of historic city planning, built by the Venetian Republic and famous for its perfectly geometric layout.
