462 kilometers of real Italy – experience Via Romagna!

Get ready for an authentic Italian cycling adventure! Via Romagna is a 462-kilometer route that leads from the coastal town of Comacchio to San Giovanni Marignano, revealing all the charm of the EmiliaRomagna region – from gentle hills and green valleys to medieval villages and sweeping views of the Adriatic Sea.

The route strikes the perfect balance between sporting challenge and pure enjoyment: every turn brings a new story, a new village, and another great excuse to stop for outstanding local food and wine. An ideal choice for anyone seeking an active journey through the heart of Italy, where nature, culture, and gastronomy come together in an unforgettable cycling adventure.

On average, we’ll ride around 97 km per day and climb approximately 1,358 meters of elevation.

Day 1

Welcome to Italy!

Your cycling adventure begins in Italy — and we’ll make sure everything is smooth, simple, and stress-free from the moment you arrive. We’ll pick you up at Bologna Airport at 12:00 PM, then head straight into the San Giuseppe, where our hotel will be waiting for us.

Once we check in, you’ll have time to get everything ready for the days ahead — bike setup, gear checks, and final adjustments — so you feel fully dialed in and prepared.

In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to explore San Giuseppe and the surrounding area at a relaxed pace, enjoy the town atmosphere, and settle in before the riding begins.

In the evening, we’ll come together for a group dinner, the perfect chance to get to know each other, enjoy great local food, and kick off the trip the right way.

Day 2 - Cycling from San Giuseppe to Imola

Via Romagna Kick-Off Ride!

After breakfast, our Via Romagna cycling journey begins at an easy, relaxed pace. We roll across the flatlands along the Po River, surrounded by orchards, irrigation canals, and wide open fields that define this fertile part of northern Italy.

In Argenta, we pass the fascinating Po Delta Eco-Museum, dedicated to life along the river that has shaped both the landscape and local culture for centuries. The route then continues through the quiet rural towns of Conselice and Massa Lombarda, where the air is rich with the scent of vineyards and fruit orchards.

We finish the day in Imola, a town steeped in history and globally famous for the Enzo e Dino Ferrari racetrack. This first stage is the perfect warm-up—an inviting introduction to the region, where endless plains slowly begin to give way to rolling hills.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Comacchio – A postcard-perfect lagoon town with canals, bridges, and unmistakable coastal charm.
  • Imola – Historic streets meet motorsport legend at one of Italy’s most iconic racing venues.

Day 3 - Cycling from Imola to Fratta Terme

Hills, History & Hidden Gems!

Day 3 reveals the true character of Romagna: rolling hills, postcard views, and layers of history at every turn. Leaving Imola, the route climbs toward Riolo Terme, a historic spa town known for its thermal tradition dating back to the 14th century.

From there, we ride through the Lamone Valley toward Brisighella, widely considered one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy. Towering above its narrow streets are three impressive 13th-century fortresses that define the town’s iconic skyline.

The journey continues to Faenza, world-famous for its ceramics. During the Renaissance, “faience” glazed pottery from Faenza was exported across Europe, leaving a lasting mark on decorative arts.

We then ride on to Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole, two perfectly planned Renaissance towns designed in the 16th century under Cosimo I de’ Medici. A final climb up to Bertinoro rewards us with sweeping views of Sangiovese vineyards and, on clear days, the Adriatic Sea.

The stage ends in Fratta Terme, the ideal place to unwind after a day packed with climbs, culture, and classic Romagna scenery.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Brisighella – A fairytale medieval village crowned by three historic towers.
  • Bertinoro – A hilltop balcony over vineyards with views stretching all the way to the Adriatic.

Day 4 - Cycling from Fratta Terme to Pennabilli

Into the Hills of Romagna!

Breakfast done, gear packed—let’s roll. Day 4 starts in Fratta Terme and takes us deeper into the rolling hills of Romagna. The road climbs steadily through orchards and vineyards, opening up wide, rewarding views that make every pedal stroke worth it.

One of the most intriguing stops along the way is Predappio, the birthplace of Benito Mussolini (1883–1945). Today, the town presents an unusual mix of layered history and modern winemaking culture, offering plenty to reflect on as we ride through.

The route then winds toward the charming town of Sarsina, birthplace of the Roman playwright Varro. Here, ancient stone streets blend seamlessly with the surrounding nature, creating a quiet, timeless atmosphere.

We wrap up the day in stunning Pennabilli, a hilltop fortress town that has preserved its medieval character to this day. From its panoramic viewpoints, valleys and ridgelines stretch out in every direction. The legs feel the effort, but the reward is big: dramatic scenery, historic streets, and that unmistakable feeling of being fully immersed in the heart of Romagna. Pennabilli is the perfect spot for an evening stroll or a relaxed dinner featuring authentic local specialties.

Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Predappio – A thought-provoking stop where history meets Romagna’s wine country.

Day 5 - Cycling from Pennabilli to Cattolica

From Stone Fortresses to Sea Breeze!

Day 5 takes us from medieval Pennabilli toward the sea, winding through Romagna’s hilly heartland. The road flows between vineyards, olive groves, and timeworn villages—classic inland Italy at its most atmospheric.

The high point of the day (in every sense) is the dramatic fortress of San Leo, perched on a sheer rock outcrop. Standing guard for centuries, it delivers jaw-dropping views across the surrounding valleys and a powerful sense of history carved in stone. From here, we descend toward Verucchio, where the skyline opens and the towers of San Marino come into view.

One of the world’s oldest republics, founded in 301 AD, San Marino still preserves its medieval streets, fortified towers, and unmistakable atmosphere—an extraordinary blend of history, culture, and panoramic views over the Romagna hills.

The route then drops all the way down to the coast, finishing in Cattolica. A warm sea breeze, the buzz of the Italian Riviera, and a well-earned sense of accomplishment welcome us to the finish. We wrap up our final evening the only proper way: great local food, good wine, and even better company.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • San Leo – A jaw-dropping cliff-top fortress with some of the most powerful views in all of Romagna.

Day 6 - Cycling from Cattolica to Cattolica

One Last Spin!

The route climbs toward Montefiore Conca and Tavoleto, where sweeping views open across the valleys and out to the Adriatic coast.

We continue through Montegridolfo and Monte del Prete Basso, passing classic Romagna countryside before turning back toward Cattolica via Tavullia.

Tavullia is famous for its deep motorsport roots as the hometown of Valentino Rossi, adding a unique racing spirit to the day. Along the way, cyclists are treated to postcard panoramas of vineyards, olive groves, and medieval villages—living proof of Romagna’s rich history and timeless charm.

Back in Cattolica, a well-earned seaside lunch awaits. With the flavors of local cuisine and the sound of the sea, we look back on five unforgettable days of cycling. The journey deserves a proper finale, and we celebrate our last evening the Italian way—great food, great wine, and great memories.
