Along Vineyards, Palaces, and Castles!

The German Romantic Road takes us on a journey from the vineyard-covered hills and baroque palaces of Würzburg all the way to the alpine scenery near Füssen. Along the way, we ride through a landscape shaped by centuries of history—past medieval towns, cobblestone streets, fragrant villages, and countless castles that seem lifted straight from a storybook.

Every kilometer blends history with fairytale charm: ancient city walls, half-timbered houses, quiet countryside roads, and, as a true highlight, the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle, rising dramatically above the alpine foothills. This is a route where romance isn’t just part of the name—it’s present in every view, every village square, and every stretch of road beneath our wheels.

A cycling journey through the heart of Germany, where landscapes tell stories and the road itself becomes the experience.

On avreage, we’ll ride 88 km per day with 700 meter of elevation gain.

Day 1

Welcome to Germany!

Your cycling adventure begins in Germany — and we’ll make sure everything is smooth, simple, and stress-free from the moment you arrive. We’ll pick you up at Munich Airport at 12:00 PM, then head straight into the Wurzburg, where our hotel will be waiting for us.

Once we check in, you’ll have time to get everything ready for the days ahead — bike setup, gear checks, and final adjustments — so you feel fully dialed in and prepared.

In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to explore Wurzburg and the surrounding area at a relaxed pace, enjoy the town atmosphere, and settle in before the riding begins.

In the evening, we’ll come together for a group dinner, the perfect chance to get to know each other, enjoy great local food, and kick off the trip the right way.

Day 2 - Cycling from Wurzburg to Wertheim

Pedaling into a German Fairytale!

After breakfast, we hop on our bikes and set off on the opening stage of our journey. The route leads us through the rolling hills of Franconia, where vineyards turn lush green in spring. This region is the heartland of outstanding Riesling and Silvaner, and cycling here feels as refined as the wines themselves.

The road winds through small, peaceful villages such as Waldbüttelbrunn and Madelhofen, each preserving the authentic rural character that defines northern Bavaria. Quiet streets, traditional houses, and a slower rhythm of life set the tone for the day.

We then follow the gentle flow of the Main River, which guides us into Wertheim—a charming medieval town watched over by an old hilltop castle. Narrow lanes lined with classic half-timbered houses invite us to slow down and soak in the atmosphere.

Our first day comes to a close with the feeling that we’ve cycled straight into the heart of a German fairytale.

Day 3 - Cycling from Wertheim to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Castles, Rivers & Medieval Dreams!

After breakfast, we leave Wertheim behind and follow the gentle flow of the Tauber River, winding its way through rolling hills and vineyard-covered slopes. This stretch is widely considered one of the most beautiful sections of Germany’s Romantic Road.

Along the route, a series of storybook towns unfolds—each with its own distinct character. Gamburg appears beneath a venerable castle that still watches over the valley. Tauberbischofsheim welcomes us with a lively market square and colorful façades that reflect centuries of life along the river. In Bad Mergentheim, the legacy of the Teutonic Knights lives on—today softened by elegant spa gardens and a relaxed atmosphere.

We continue toward Weikersheim, where the landscape opens up to reveal the Renaissance Weikersheim Palace and its famous baroque gardens—one of the hidden architectural gems of the route.

Following the river, the pace slowly rises as we approach Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. As evening falls, cobbled streets, fortified walls, towers, and historic squares transform the town into a living fairytale—best experienced on a quiet evening stroll.

Day 4 - Cycling from Rothenburg to Harburg

From Fairytale Walls to a Meteorite City!

After breakfast, we leave the storybook setting of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and ride into the rolling countryside of Franconia.

Our first stop is Feuchtwangen, a town built around a historic market square where lively medieval fairs once took place. Even today, you can still feel the spirit of merchants, craftsmen, and travelers who shaped life along this route for centuries.

We continue toward Dinkelsbühl, widely regarded as one of Germany’s most enchanting towns. Its intact city walls, towers, and colorful façades around the main square create a scene that feels untouched by time. Here, the Middle Ages don’t feel preserved—they feel alive.

The ride then follows gentle river bends and quiet country roads toward Nördlingen, a town unlike any other. Nördlingen sits inside a massive meteorite crater formed nearly 15 million years ago. Perfectly round and completely enclosed by its city walls, it’s a place you can truly feel the moment you ride through its gates.

We finish the day in Harburg, where the impressive Harburg Castle rises above the town. One of Bavaria’s oldest and best-preserved castles, it has watched over the valley for nearly a thousand years—and arriving here feels like stepping onto the pages of a fairytale.

Day 5 - Cycling from Harburg to Klosterlechfeld

Following Rivers, Monasteries & Merchant Legends!

After breakfast, we leave Harburg behind and descend toward the Danube River, one of Europe’s longest and most important rivers. The road then follows its course across peaceful plains, where fields and orchards reveal the authentic heart of Bavaria.

We ride through the villages of Marxheim and Rain, surrounded by wide open landscapes painted in shades of green meadows and golden grain fields—classic Bavarian countryside at its finest.

Along the way stands Thierhaupten Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery with centuries of history. Its presence is a quiet reminder that this land has long been shaped by spirituality, culture, and tradition.

Our journey continues toward Augsburg, one of Germany’s oldest cities and a former hub of major European trade routes. Augsburg is closely linked to the powerful Fugger family, a banking and merchant dynasty that rose to prominence in the 15th and 16th centuries, financing kings, emperors, and even wars. Their legacy still defines the city today—visible in its architecture, grand squares, and the historic Fuggerei, the world’s oldest social housing complex still in use.

The final kilometers unfold calmly along the Lech River, weaving through villages and open farmland until we reach Lechfeld, where we settle in at a comfortable hotel and bring the day to a relaxed close.

Day 6 - Cycling from Klosterlechfeld to Fussen

From River Plains to Alpine Fairytales!

In the morning, we follow the Lech River southward, where gentle plains slowly rise into the rolling hills of the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Cycling here is calm and fluid, while the views grow wider and more dramatic with every kilometer.

In Landsberg am Lech, we’re welcomed by a lively old town full of character. From there, we ride along a former Roman road that once connected north and south, passing through Epfach and Schongau, where the closeness of the Alps becomes tangible—in the crisp air, the changing light, and the scent of spruce forests.

As we reach Lechbruck am See, the scenery opens into the panorama we’ve been riding toward: white riverbanks, turquoise water, green valleys, and the first powerful outlines of alpine ridges. Ahead of us lies our destination—Füssen.

Füssen is a historic town with a charming old center, deep musical roots, and stone-paved streets that seem to end exactly where the mountains begin. Towering above the landscape rises one of the world’s most recognizable silhouettes—Neuschwanstein Castle, the dreamlike residence of King Ludwig II. Built as a medieval fantasy little more than a century ago, it remains the ultimate symbol of romance.
