A Cycling Adventure Through the Real Italy!

This journey through the heart of the Central Apennines takes you straight into the true soul of Italy — from dramatic mountain passes beneath Gran Sasso, where the sky meets towering peaks, to the rolling green valleys of Abruzzo, filled with ancient villages, monasteries, and local legends. Every turn leads you deeper into wild, untouched landscapes: nature reserves, centuries-old chestnut forests, and quiet mountain pastures where time feels slower.

Along the way, we’ll ride through places shaped by history — the medieval town of Leonessa, the historic city of L’Aquila, peaceful stone villages on the Campo Imperatore plateau, and the lively coastal city of Pescara on the Adriatic. We’ll pedal roads once traveled by Romans, pilgrims, and merchants — routes that still carry the unmistakable feeling of the past.

This is the kind of tour where the calm of high plateaus meets the thrill of big climbs, where every view feels earned, and where each day reveals a new side of authentic, untamed Italy.

On average, we’ll ride 89 km per day with 1,814 meters of elevation gain.

Day 1

Welcome to Italy!

Your cycling adventure begins in Bologna — and we’ll make sure everything is smooth, simple, and stress-free from the moment you arrive. We’ll pick you up at Bologna Airport at 12:00 PM, then head straight to Ascoli Piceno, where our hotel will be waiting for us.

Once we check in, we’ll take care of the essentials: bike setup, gear checks, and final adjustments, so everything feels perfectly dialed in for the days ahead.

In the afternoon, you’ll have time to explore Ascoli Piceno and the surrounding area at a relaxed pace — the perfect way to settle in and soak up the authentic Italian atmosphere before the riding begins.

In the evening, we’ll come together for a group dinner, where we’ll enjoy great local food, get to know each other, and go over the route plan — so everyone feels confident, excited, and ready to ride.

Day 2 - Cycling from Ascoli Piceno to Norcia

A Classic Italian Start!

It’s time for our first stage on the bike — and we couldn’t ask for a better place to start than Ascoli Piceno, one of Italy’s most charming hidden gems, famous for its beautiful stone architecture and elegant historic center.

We roll out straight from town, and the road immediately starts to climb toward the main challenge of the day: Forca di Presta Pass (1,536 m). This is one of the most scenic gateways into the Monti Sibillini area, with wide-open mountain views and that true “Central Apennines” feeling — quiet roads, fresh air, and epic landscapes all around.

From the top, we’ll enjoy a rewarding descent down into Norcia, a town known for its mountain atmosphere and authentic Italian character — the perfect finish to our first day of riding.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Ascoli Piceno – A stunning historic town known for its elegant piazzas, travertine stone buildings, and authentic Italian vibe.
  • Forca di Presta Pass (1,536 m) – A beautiful Apennine mountain pass with incredible views and a classic climb to kick off the adventure.

Day 3 - Cycling from Norcia to Rieti

Big Apennine Day: High Pass Views!

After an early breakfast, we leave the peaceful town of Norcia behind and head into a long, rolling day deep in the heart of the Central Apennines. The route starts through green valleys and forested roads before gradually climbing toward Leonessa, a historic mountain town sitting beneath the powerful Monte Terminillo massif.

From there, the real challenge begins: the climb to Sella di Leonessa (1,890 m) — one of the most scenic viewpoints in central Italy. This isn’t just a tough climb, it’s a ride through history. These roads once connected regions like Umbria and Lazio, traveled by shepherds, soldiers, and pilgrims for centuries. At the top, the views open up into raw Apennine ridgelines that feel truly wild and untouched.

From the pass, we enjoy a long descent past Pian de’ Valli and through small picturesque villages before arriving in Rieti, a town locals proudly call the “center of Italy.” Once an important Roman settlement on the ancient Via Salaria, Rieti still holds onto its medieval charm — stone streets, historic buildings, and that unmistakable Italian atmosphere.

We’ll wrap up the day in Rieti with tired legs, big views in the memory bank, and a true taste of what makes the Apennines so special.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Sella di Leonessa (1,890 m) – A stunning high-mountain pass with some of the best panoramic views in the Central Apennines.
  • Rieti – A historic town known as the “center of Italy,” full of medieval character and authentic local vibes.

Day 4 - Cycling from Rieti to Popoli Terme

Italy’s “Little Tibet”!

After a morning transfer from Rieti, we arrive in L’Aquila, the capital of Abruzzo — a city filled with Renaissance palaces and historic landmarks like the stunning Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio, still carrying the charm of medieval Italy. From here, one of the most spectacular stages of the entire trip begins.

We’ll climb gradually out of L’Aquila through Camarda, passing stone houses and old chestnut trees, before reaching Filetto and a nearby lake — the point where the real climbing begins toward Maccione Pass. As the road opens up toward Campo Imperatore, we enter one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Italy: a vast, open plateau surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Gran Sasso massif.

At the top, we reach Campo Imperatore (2,130 m) — often called the “Little Tibet of Italy” for its wide, wild, high-altitude scenery. It’s also a place packed with history: during World War II, Mussolini was held here, and today you’ll still find old mountain lodges and an observatory standing in this incredible setting.

From there, we descend past Lago Racollo and the stone-built gem of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of the most beautifully preserved villages in Italy. The ride continues with a scenic drop past the famous Rocca Calascio, a dramatic castle rising above the plateau like something out of a movie.

We then cross the Ofena Plateau toward Capestrano, known for the Renaissance Piccolomini Castle, before rolling down into the valley and finishing in Popoli Terme, where a well-earned thermal recovery awaits after a huge day in the mountains.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • L’Aquila – The historic capital of Abruzzo, known for its beautiful architecture, rich culture, and mountain setting.
  • Campo Imperatore (2,130 m) – The legendary “Little Tibet of Italy,” a stunning high plateau in the Gran Sasso with epic views and powerful history.
  • Rocca Calascio – One of Italy’s most iconic mountain castles, perched high above the landscape with unforgettable panoramic scenery.

Day 5 - Cycling to Blockhaus and back

Giro-Style Glory!

We start the day in Popoli Terme, a thermal town where even the Romans came to recover in warm springs more than 2,000 years ago. After a few easy warm-up kilometers, the road begins to climb past Castello Caracciolo, an ancient fortress that once guarded this key passage between Abruzzo and the heart of Italy.

Soon we reach Roccamorice, the gateway to one of the most famous climbs in the Apennines: Monte Blockhaus.

The climb to Blockhaus (2,068 m) is a true monster — nearly 20 km long with over 1,500 meters of elevation gain. It’s considered a holy grail of Italian cycling and has been a legendary battleground in the Giro d’Italia, where riders like Eddy Merckx proved their strength — including his first ever mountain stage win right here.

The road climbs through the wild forests of Majella National Park, before opening into a rugged, rocky high-mountain landscape with breathtaking views stretching all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

After a quick stop at the summit, we’ll enjoy a long, twisty descent back toward Popoli Terme, where we’ll finish the day with tired legs and a huge sense of achievement.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Castello Caracciolo – A historic fortress perched above the valley, once protecting the route between Abruzzo and inland Italy.
  • Monte Blockhaus (2,068 m) – One of Italy’s most iconic climbs, famous for Giro d’Italia history, brutal elevation gain, and epic summit views.

Day 6 - Cycling from Popoli Terme to Pescara

One Last Ride!

Our final stage begins in Popoli Terme, where after breakfast we hop on the bikes one last time. The route takes us through gentle rolling countryside toward Scafa, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards — the perfect “real Italy” farewell ride.

From there, the road gradually climbs toward Chieti, one of the oldest cities in Italy, with roots reaching back to ancient times. Sitting high above the valley, its historic center offers incredible panoramic views across the Pescara River Valley — from the peaks of Gran Sasso all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Then it’s time for the grand finale: a long, smooth descent down to Pescara, a lively coastal city where our journey ends right by the waves. We’ll celebrate the best way possible — with a refreshing dip in the sea, followed by a well-earned dinner and a proper toast to an unforgettable trip.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Chieti – One of Italy’s oldest hilltop cities, offering stunning valley-to-sea views and a beautiful historic atmosphere.
