Cycling tour in Slovenia, Italy, and Austria

This multi-day road cycling adventure based in Kranjska Gora takes you deep into the heart of the Julian Alps and across three countries — Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. Each stage connects legendary mountain roads, iconic alpine lakes, and historic border passes, creating a route that feels both epic and authentic. Riders can expect an average of 95 km and around 2,100 metres of elevation gain per day, making this tour a true challenge and a rewarding experience for experienced road cyclists.

With full vehicle support and carefully planned logistics, the journey includes some of the most famous climbs in the region, such as Vršič, Mangart Saddle, Monte Zoncolan, Dobratsch, and Pyramidenkogel, alongside unforgettable natural highlights like Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Lago di Predil, and the Soča Valley.

All of our trips are designed for maximum enjoyment on the bike. If any stage feels too challenging, our support vehicle is always available, so you can shorten the route whenever you need. Every stage can be adjusted to fit each rider’s abilities and preferences.

Day 1

Welcome to the Julian Alps!

Your alpine cycling adventure begins with our meeting at Zagreb Airport at 11:00 AM, where we gather and travel together to Kranjska Gora — a classic mountain town and our home base for the week. After arrival, you’ll settle into your accommodation, unpack, and prepare your cycling gear in a relaxed setting surrounded by alpine scenery.

Our team is on hand to assist with bike setup and final adjustments, ensuring everything is ready for the days ahead. In the evening, we come together for a welcome dinner and a short briefing, where we introduce the week’s program and get to know each other. It’s a calm and enjoyable start to a journey that will take us through the mountain roads of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria, setting the tone for an unforgettable cycling experience across three countries.

Day 2 - Cycling from Kranjska Gora to Mt. Zoncolan

Italy’s Legendary Climb!

We start the first riding day directly from Kranjska Gora, descending through a scenic alpine valley toward Tarvisio, where the shift in culture is felt almost immediately. The route follows historic Friulian roads once used by traders traveling between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Today, these quiet roads offer smooth riding alongside alpine rivers and through peaceful valleys.

Just after Tolmezzo, the day’s main challenge begins: the climb to Monte Zoncolan (1,750 m), one of the most legendary ascents in professional cycling. Known worldwide for its brutal gradients and iconic appearances in the Giro d’Italia, Zoncolan is a true rite of passage for road cyclists. Reaching the summit delivers a reward every rider understands — a mix of pride, silence, and endless mountain views. After conquering the “King of Friuli,” our support vehicle transfers us comfortably back to Kranjska Gora, where the afternoon is free to relax or explore the surroundings.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Monte Zoncolan (113 km | 1,750 m) – One of the most famous and demanding climbs in world cycling, legendary from the Giro d’Italia
  • Tarvisio & Friulian backroads – A cultural transition from the Alps into northern Italy with quiet, scenic roads

Day 3 - Cycling from Kranjska Gora to Lake Predil

Slovenia’s Most Iconic Mountain roads!

Day two opens with one of Slovenia’s greatest cycling icons — the climb to Vršič Pass (1,611 m), the highest road pass in the country. Granite mountain walls rise above the road, accompanying every pedal stroke through historic cobbled hairpins built during World War I. A long descent leads into the stunning Trenta Valley, often considered one of Europe’s most beautiful alpine valleys, where the Soča River glows in its unmistakable emerald colour.

A stop at the Great Soča Gorges is almost mandatory. These dramatic river canyons rank among Slovenia’s most impressive natural sights. The route continues toward Bovec, where the second major challenge of the day begins — the climb to Mangart Saddle (2,055 m), the highest paved road in Slovenia and one of the most scenic in the Alps. The road clings to steep mountain slopes, opening wide views across the Julian Alps. After the summit, a flowing descent brings us to Lago di Predil, an alpine lake known for its deep green waters and perfect for a refreshing swim. We finish the day with a transfer back to Kranjska Gora, carrying memories of one of the most epic stages of the week.

Day three is a true tribute to Slovenia’s postcard-perfect scenery. We ride out of Kranjska Gora through the alpine village of Mojstrana, before the road leads us into the quiet forests of Pokljuka — a high plateau famous for its biathlon events and endless spruce forests. A scenic descent through the peaceful hamlet of Podjelje brings us into the Bohinj Valley, where the magical Lake Bohinj welcomes us with its calm waters and mountain reflections.

From Bohinj, we follow a dedicated cycling path toward Bled, world-famous for its island church and medieval castle perched high above the lake. Here, we enjoy a well-deserved stop for kremšnita, the must-try local cream cake, and a coffee with an unforgettable view. Italian Passes & Alpine Lakes!

Day four begins with a morning transfer to Bovec, before we ride toward the Italian border and face the first challenge of the day — the climb to Sella Carnizza (1,069 m). This quiet mountain pass opens sweeping views into the wild Friulian valleys, setting the tone for a day of cross-border riding. A descent into Italy follows, where stone villages and alpine meadows create the feeling that time has slowed down.

The road rises again toward Sella Nevea (1,190 m), a dramatic pass beneath the north faces of Mount Montaž (Jôf di Montasio), one of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. From the pass, we turn toward Malga Montasio, a beautiful high meadow known as the birthplace of the famous Montasio cheese and one of the finest viewpoints in the region. We finish the day at the familiar Lago di Predil, where a refreshing swim is the perfect reward after a big day in the mountains.
