Off the Pavement, Into the Wild

Ljubljana is the perfect base not only for road cycling, but for one of the most rewarding gravel weeks in Slovenia. Over seven days, we explore landscapes that most road cyclists never see—untouched plateaus, hidden forest tracks, classic Karst paths, and quiet valleys where gravel takes center stage.

From the capital, we head out in every direction:

North – Remote plateaus below the Kamnik Alps, gravel roads around Krvavec and Jezersko
West – The Škofja Loka hills, rolling fields, and historic farm tracks
South – The Ljubljana Marsh, Inner Carniola, Rakov Škocjan, Planina Field, and forest corridors of the Pivka Basin
East & Center – Smooth gravel of the Polhov Gradec Dolomites, gentle Savinja hills, and connections between vineyard-covered ridges

This trip is built for true explorers—for riders who seek the silence of forests, wide views from lonely plateaus, and natural wonders reachable only by gravel. After every ride, we return to Ljubljana—a city that blends urban comfort with immediate access to wild nature.

All of our trips are designed for maximum enjoyment on the bike. If any stage feels too challenging, our support vehicle is always available, so you can shorten the route whenever you need. Every stage can be adjusted to fit each rider’s abilities and preferences.

Day 1

Welcome to Slovenia!

Day one is all about settling in—no riding yet, but the adventure already begins. Guests arrive at Zagreb Airport, where we meet at 12:00 PM and travel together to our home base for the week: Ljubljana—a vibrant, green capital rich in history and character.

After checking into our centrally located hotel, we take time to set up bikes, inspect equipment, and make sure everything is dialed in for the days ahead. The afternoon is easy and unhurried—perfect for a first stroll along the Ljubljanica River or a quick wander through the charming old town.

In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner, get to know the group and guides, and walk through what’s coming in the days ahead. It’s a calm, well-paced introduction to a week filled with mountains, passes, lakes, and Slovenia’s most iconic scenery—with Ljubljana as our comfortable, familiar home base throughout the journey.

Day 2 - Cycling from Ljubljana to Škofja Loka and back

The Green Belt of Ljubljana!

On day two, we leave Ljubljana along its northern edge, linking into quiet gravel paths that follow the Sava River. The calm flow of the river guides us toward Tacen, where the terrain begins to rise toward Škofja Loka—a town set at the meeting point of medieval history and rolling green hills.

The true gravel character of the day reveals itself on the climb to Osolnik, a panoramic summit offering sweeping views across the entire Škofja Loka hill country. From here, a flowing route leads us toward Govejék, where forest tracks alternate with open views of isolated farms and that unmistakable feeling of riding just one step beyond everyday civilization.

We continue toward Trnovec, then ride along a ridge to the final gravel highlight of the day: Toško Čelo, a favorite gravel and MTB balcony high above Ljubljana. From here, forest trails guide us back down into the city, finishing a stage that perfectly showcases the incredible green belt surrounding the capital—all in a single day.

Day 3 - Cycling from Ljubljana to Rakov Škocjan

Gravel Through the Marshes and Karst!

On day three, we roll out of Ljubljana via the forested trails of Golovec, whose dense network of gravel roads offers the perfect warm-up for the day. Dropping toward the city’s edge, the landscape opens into the Ljubljana Marsh—a remarkable wetland where gravel paths wind between drainage canals, open meadows, and habitats rich with birdlife and rare plant species.

We continue toward Vrhnika, where the route begins a gradual climb to Smrečni Rob, a scenic ridgeline marking the transition from the marshlands into the Inner Carniola region. A flowing descent leads us toward Rakek and straight into one of Slovenia’s most captivating natural areas: Rakov Škocjan Landscape Park.

Hidden stone bridges, dramatic karst formations, forested gorges, and wide clearings make this park feel like a ride through geological history itself. We slow the pace here, taking time to explore the natural bridges, sinkholes, and scenery that make Rakov Škocjan truly unforgettable. After soaking it all in, we load up and return comfortably to Ljubljana.

Day 4 - Cycling from Velika Planina to Logar Valley

High Pastures & Alpine Poetry!

Day four begins with a transfer to Podvolovjek, where the road immediately kicks up—marking the start of one of Slovenia’s most beautiful gravel climbs. We ascend onto Velika Planina, a high mountain plateau famous for its traditional shepherd huts, endless pastures, and sweeping views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Riding across open meadows and grazing fields, the scenery unfolds into a panorama that’s hard to forget.

We loop across the plateau among wooden huts and herds of cattle, then descend back toward the valley. The route leads us to Luče, where the rugged Alpine world briefly softens—before we enter the wild beauty of the Solčava region. From here, we climb toward Podolševa, a remote plateau dotted with isolated farms, and ride one of the most scenic roads in the country: the Solčava Panoramic Road, with wide-open views across the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

A quiet descent follows through Matkov Kot—a place of silence, meadows, and towering rock walls. To finish the day, we roll into the legendary Logar Valley, a glacial masterpiece where the road ends beneath the powerful Rinka Waterfall. This natural amphitheater provides a perfect, poetic finale to a truly Alpine day.

Day 5 - Cycling from Mašun Hut to Lake Cerknica

Forests, Castles & a Vanishing Lake!

Day five begins with a transfer to Mašun, deep in one of the largest continuous forest complexes in Europe. This is true wilderness—home to brown bears, wolves, and lynx, surrounded by pristine beech and fir forests. It’s no coincidence that this is where the Mašun Visitor Centre is located, offering insight into the wildlife and primeval forests of the Snežnik region.

From Mašun, we head out on gravel toward the Sviščaki mountain hut, one of the classic starting points for ascents of Snežnik. Open clearings and dense conifer forests alternate as we ride through the remote area of Mirna Gora, entering the wild landscape beneath mighty Mount Snežnik. A long descent leads us to Babno Polje, often called the coldest village in Slovenia, famous for recording some of the lowest winter temperatures in the country. From here, rolling gravel roads guide us toward Snežnik Castle, a beautifully preserved Renaissance castle set among ancient forest and reflective ponds—one of the most fairy-tale locations of the entire journey.

We continue across the open landscapes of Loška Dolina, where forests slowly give way to meadows and flatlands, until the scenery opens dramatically onto Lake Cerknica—the largest intermittent lake in Europe. This extraordinary natural phenomenon marks the end of the stage, with time set aside to explore and absorb its ever-changing character. Afterward, we return comfortably to Ljubljana by van.

The route winds through spruce forests, open meadows, and airy ridgelines, delivering a true sense of mountain freedom.

A long, flowing descent takes us to Šmartno ob Dreti, where the terrain rises once again. We begin the climb toward Farbanca, a scenic forested ridge that leads deep into a network of remote gravel roads. Hidden among the trees, we reach the Dobrove hut, a quiet mountain hut surrounded by forest and the kind of silence only high ridges can offer.

From here, the route heads toward Parižlje, where forests slowly give way to the wide-open landscapes of the Savinja Valley. We continue riding alongside the Savinja River, passing Vrbensko Lake, before finishing the stage in Žalec—home to the world’s first beer fountain, a uniquely Slovenian way to toast a great day on the bike.
