Along the Iron Curtain Trails: A Cycling Adventure Through History!

Our cycling journey begins in the far north of Austria, where we’ll set off on gravel roads and forest trails along the former Czech Iron Curtain. Riding the border between the Czech Republic and Germany, we’ll pass through wild landscapes where guard towers and barbed wire once stood. Today, those same areas have transformed into open trails, peaceful forests, and picture-perfect villages.

The route takes us through places rich in history, where Europe’s past still feels close. We’ll cross national parks, remote river valleys, and panoramic viewpoints that offer a unique perspective on both the past and the present of this once-divided region.

On average, we’ll ride 78 km per day with 1,288 meters of elevation gain.

Day 1

Welcome to Germany!

Your cycling adventure begins in Munich — and we’ll make sure your arrival is smooth, easy, and stress-free. We’ll pick you up at Munich Airport at 12:00 PM, then head straight to Passau, where our hotel will be waiting for us.

Once we check in, we’ll take care of the essentials: bike setup, gear checks, and final adjustments, so everything feels dialed in and ready for the days ahead.

In the afternoon, we’ll head out to explore Passau at a relaxed pace. You’ll have time to wander through the old town, enjoy the riverside atmosphere, and take in the unique charm of this historic city. In the evening, we’ll meet for a group dinner, where we’ll enjoy great local food, get to know each other, and go over the route plan — so everyone feels confident and excited for the adventure.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Passau – Known as the “City of Three Rivers,” Passau sits at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers. Its colorful Old Town, beautiful Baroque architecture, and the impressive St. Stephen’s Cathedral make it a perfect place to start the trip.
Day 2 - Cycling from Schwarzenberg am Bohmerwakd to Kubova Huf

Endless Forest Trails!

After breakfast, we’ll take it easy and make our way to the starting point of our first stage. A short transfer brings us to Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald, located in the far north of Austria — where our cycling adventure officially begins.

Not long after we roll out, we’ll cross the Czech border and ride alongside the stunning Lipno Reservoir, the largest man-made lake in the Czech Republic. With wide-open views and a peaceful waterside vibe, it’s an unforgettable way to kick off the trip.

From there, the route dives into endless Czech forests, taking us across a mix of terrain — smooth forest roads, scenic gravel stretches, and the occasional paved section. It’s the perfect “welcome stage”: fun, varied, and built to get everyone into the rhythm of the journey.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Bohemian Forest (Šumava) Region – One of Central Europe’s most beautiful wilderness areas, known for its deep pine forests, quiet backroads, and fresh mountain air. This is the kind of place where you truly feel off the grid — pure nature, peaceful scenery, and epic gravel riding in every direction.

Day 3 - Cycling from Kubova Huf to Zelena Lhota

Big Climbs and the Iron Curtain Legacy!

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll hit the road feeling fresh and ready for our first truly challenging stage. Today is all about rolling terrain — a full day of climbs and descents — with our highest point reaching 1,230 meters above sea level.

We’ll ride deep into Šumava National Park, one of the most untouched and best-preserved natural regions in the Czech Republic. This is also where we’ll cross the CzechGerman border for the first time, adding an exciting international touch to the day.

Before long, we’ll return to the Czech side and continue toward Železná Ruda, a town that once sat directly along the heavily guarded line of the Iron Curtain — the Cold War border that separated East and West. Back then, armed guards patrolled these forests and access was strictly controlled. Today, the same landscapes are open and welcoming, with well-maintained cycling routes and powerful reminders of that era along the way.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • The Iron Curtain – A historic Cold War border that once divided Europe for decades, marked by fences, watchtowers, and restricted zones. Riding here today is a unique experience — a chance to pedal through peaceful nature while tracing the powerful story of a once-closed frontier that has now become a symbol of freedom and connection.

Day 4 - Cycling from Zelena Lhota to Železna

Border Crossings and Iron Curtain History!

Recharged and ready to roll, we head into another exciting day on the bike — and today comes with a twist: we’ll cross the Czech–German border five times. This is one of those stages that feels like a true adventure, where every few miles the landscape — and even the country — changes around you.

We’ll be riding through a region that was once part of the Czech Iron Curtain, the heavily guarded Cold War border that separated the socialist East from the capitalist West. Along the way, you’ll spot memorials, historical markers, and even remnants of old watchtowers — powerful reminders of how sharply this line once divided Europe. Today, the same area is peaceful, open, and connected by beautiful cycling routes.

Our route takes us through Furth im Wald and Waldmünchen, then continues toward Železná, where a comfortable hotel will be waiting for us. The day includes one steep climb that will test your legs — followed by a fast, fun descent that makes it all worth it.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • The Bavarian Forest & Bohemian Borderlands – A rugged, scenic region filled with deep forests, rolling hills, and quiet backroads that feel truly off the beaten path. This is classic Central Europe: fresh air, peaceful villages, and a landscape shaped by both nature and history — perfect terrain for an unforgettable gravel adventure.

Day 5 - Cycling from Železna to Mariánské Lázně

Rolling Hills and Watchtowers!

After breakfast, we’ll roll out feeling fresh and ready for the last truly challenging stage of the trip. Today’s route is packed with variety — rolling terrain with short but punchy climbs, fast descents, and that classic “one more hill” energy that makes the day feel like a real cycling adventure.

By now, we’ll have experienced the powerful story of the Czech Iron Curtain, the border that separated Eastern and Western Europe for decades and once made crossing between countries nearly impossible. Today, we ride freely through landscapes that used to be closed off — a reminder of just how much has changed.

Along the way, we’ll pass several lookout towers that once served as border watchtowers. Back then, guards monitored every movement from above. Today, these same towers offer incredible panoramic views over the forests and hills of a region that was once divided.

On a few short sections, you may need to lift your bike over rocks or small natural obstacles — nothing extreme, but just enough to add that extra touch of real adventure.

We’ll finish the day in Mariánské Lázně, one of the most beautiful spa towns in the Czech Republic. A comfortable hotel will be waiting for us — the perfect place to relax, recover, and enjoy a well-earned rest after an unforgettable ride.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Mariánské Lázně– A legendary Czech spa town known for its elegant colonnades, peaceful parks, and natural mineral springs.

Day 6 - Cycling from Prikra to Cheb

One Last Ride!

After breakfast, we’ll take our time to enjoy the morning, pack up our gear, and get ready for the final day of our cycling journey. Today’s stage is the shortest of the trip — but it’s still packed with fun, thanks to multiple border crossings between the Czech Republic and Germany.

Over a 50 km route, we’ll weave back and forth across the border, soaking up the peaceful landscapes and scenic views one last time before reaching our final destination: Cheb, located in the far northwest of the Czech Republic.

Cheb is a town full of character, known for its rich history and well-preserved medieval architecture. The highlight is the famous Špalíček area — a picture-perfect cluster of colorful 13th-century houses that make the town feel like a living postcard. Cheb has played an important strategic role throughout history, and you can still feel that sense of the past as you explore its streets and squares.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Cheb – A historic Czech town with a stunning medieval center, famous for the colorful Špalíček houses, charming old streets, and a lively main square. It’s the perfect finish line for this journey.
