Off the Pavement, Into the Wild

Ride along the route of a former narrow-gauge railway, winding through vineyards, tunnels, and Mediterranean towns on a journey that connects three countries, three cultures, and one legendary rail story.

The Parenzana, also known as the Trail of Health and Friendship, is today one of the most popular cycling routes along the Adriatic, following the original railway line that once carried wine, salt, olive oil, and passengers from Trieste to Poreč between 1902 and 1935.

Our cycling days take us:

  • across Italy – to panoramic viewpoints above the Gulf of Trieste
  • through Slovenian Istria – tunnels, viaducts, olive groves, and vineyards
  • across Croatian Istria – past medieval hill towns to the final destination in Poreč

The route is scenic, safe, and suitable for a wide range of cyclists—an ideal blend of history, gastronomy, nature, and relaxed riding.

Along the way, you’ll experience:

  • Views over the Gulf of Trieste
  • Historic Parenzana tunnels and viaducts
  • Rolling Istrian hills lined with vineyards and olive trees
  • Charming villages and the old town of Poreč
  • Smooth gravel sections running just above the Adriatic Sea

Each day reveals a new chapter of the Parenzana story—a route that once connected people by rail and today brings cyclists together from all over the world.

All of our trips are designed for maximum enjoyment on the bike. If any stage feels too challenging, our support vehicle is always available, so you can shorten the route whenever you need. Every stage can be adjusted to fit each rider’s abilities and preferences.

Day 1

Where the Story Begins!

Day one is a no-riding day, but the journey truly begins. Guests arrive at Zagreb Airport, where we meet at 12:00 PM and travel together to Italy—specifically to the outskirts of Trieste, the city where the Parenzana legend was born.

After arrival, we settle in, set up our equipment, and check bikes to make sure everything is dialed in for the days ahead on the historic railway route. The rest of the afternoon is reserved for a short visit to Trieste—a true Central European port city shaped by Venetian, Austro-Hungarian, and Italian influences, known for its grand squares, marble palaces, and breathtaking views over the Adriatic.

In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner to get to know each other, talk through the plans, and review the route for the coming days. A short briefing follows with final details and time for questions.

Day 2 - Cycling from Trieste to Portorož

First Touch of Slovenia!

Day two begins in Muggia, a charming seaside town just across the Italian border, where our route meets the Adriatic Sea for the first time. We ride along the coast before crossing into Slovenia, where olive groves and rolling viewpoints welcome us above Bertoki.

The trail then climbs above Koper, opening wide views over the entire Gulf of Trieste and the Istrian coastline. Keeping a relaxed rhythm, we continue toward Strunjan, a protected coastal reserve known for the highest cliff on the eastern Adriatic, historic salt pans, and sweeping sea views that signal true Mediterranean riding.

From here, the route turns into a classic coastal experience as we roll into Piran, one of the most beautiful towns on the Slovenian coast. Tartini Square, Venetian palaces, narrow stone streets, and the hilltop Church of St. George create a timeless atmosphere where history, architecture, and the sea come together.

We finish the day in nearby Portorož, a lively seaside resort lined with palm trees and a waterfront promenade—perfect for our first true Mediterranean dinner by the sea.

Day 3 - Cycling from Portorož to Motovun

From Salt Pans to Hilltop Legends!

Day three starts in Portorož, riding through Lucija before reaching the Sečovlje Salt Pans, one of the oldest salt-producing areas on the Adriatic. The atmosphere here is calm and timeless—salt lagoons, stone salt houses, and centuries-old traditions of salt making create a landscape once closely tied to the Parenzana, which connected this coast with inland Istria and beyond.

Soon after, we cross the border into Croatia and head deeper into the Istrian interior. The scenery changes quickly as flat coastal land gives way to rolling hills, olive groves, and vineyards. The road steps upward toward Kaštel and Kaštelir, guiding us along winding Istrian backroads where every turn feels more rural and remote.

The higher we climb, the closer we get to the highlight of the day: Motovun, a legendary medieval town perched high above the Mirna Valley. Famous for its truffles, wine cellars, and breathtaking views, Motovun rewards the final kilometers of climbing with an unforgettable panorama—stone walls, a bell tower, and ancient houses rising proudly above the rolling green hills of Istria.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Sečovlje Salt Pans (6 km) – A historic coastal landscape shaped by centuries of traditional salt harvesting, rich in wildlife and cultural heritage
  • Motovun (56.3 km) – A iconic hilltop town known for truffles, medieval walls, and sweeping views over the Mirna River valley

Day 4 - Cycling from Motovun to Poreč

From Hilltowns to the Sea!

On day four, we leave Motovun behind, riding along gently rolling Istrian roads before descending into the valley, where the classic Istrian landscape unfolds—vineyards, olive groves, and stone houses scattered across sunlit hills. Our route first brings us to Vižinada, a charming village overlooking the Mirna Valley and a classic stop along the Parenzana.

We continue toward Višnjan, known for its internationally respected astronomical observatory, before turning our wheels toward the coast. As the road drops closer to the sea, the Adriatic comes back into view and we roll into Poreč, one of Istria’s most beloved destinations.

Poreč welcomes us with its ancient old town, narrow white-stone streets, and the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica, creating a perfect and memorable finish to our journey. The final kilometers follow the coastline all the way to the Plava Laguna, where we officially complete the ride—by the sea, among palm trees and pine-scented air, with the satisfying feeling of having crossed the entire Istrian peninsula on one of Europe’s most legendary cycling routes.

Day 5

Until the Next Adventure!

After a final relaxed breakfast by the sea, we say goodbye to Poreč and the Istrian coast. We then settle into the vans for a comfortable transfer to Zagreb Airport, arriving at 1:00 PM.

Along the way, we look back on the journey we’ve shared—from Italian Muggia, along the Slovenian coast, across the rolling hills of Istria, and all the way to Poreč. The Parenzana has carried us through three cultures, three landscapes, and one continuous story—built on health, friendship, and relaxed cycling.

At the airport, we say our goodbyes, wish everyone a safe journey home, and—as always—leave the door open for the next cycling adventure.
