Ride the Wild Heart of Slovenia!

From Mountains to the Adriatic Sea — ride the very best gravel Slovenia has to offer.

Welcome to a 14-day gravel/MTB adventure that takes you across an entire country, from deep Pohorje forests to wild karst plateaus, from high-mountain valleys to the sun-soaked coast. You will ride an average of 60 km per day and gain approximately 1,100 metres of elevation each day.

This journey is designed for riders who want to experience Slovenia in a completely different way — far from traffic, crowds, and pavement. You’ll follow remote gravel roads, forest tracks, mountain passes and hidden natural corridors that road cyclists will simply never discover.

Slovenia may be small, but its diversity is unbelievable. In just two weeks, you’ll travel through three distinct geographic worlds and an endless mix of micro-landscapes.

You’ll ride beneath massive alpine peaks, cross quiet mountain passes, roll through wine country, traverse the unique limestone karst dotted with caves — and finally finish your journey by dipping your wheels straight into the Adriatic Sea.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Alps-to-Sea adventure, this is it.

All of our trips are designed for maximum enjoyment on the bike. If any stage feels too challenging, our support vehicle is always available, so you can shorten the route whenever you need. Every stage can be adjusted to fit each rider’s abilities and preferences.

Day 1

Welcome to Slovenia!

On our first day, we’ll pick you up right from the airport. We offer pickup at Zagreb airport at 12:00 PM.

If these times don’t work for you, we can arrange a private pickup at a different time for an additional fee, so you won’t miss a moment of the adventure.

After your transfer, we arrive in Maribor — Slovenia’s second-largest city. Once we settle into the hotel, we take a relaxed afternoon stroll through the old town.

Later, we take some time to prep our gear and bikes, go over the essentials, and make sure everything is ready for the days ahead.

In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner where we get to know each other, walk through the plan for the journey, and start to feel the rhythm of the adventure that will carry us all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

⭐ Today’s MUST-SEE Highlights in Maribor

  • The Old Vine House — home to the oldest grapevine in the world
  • Lent riverside district (historic waterfront, cafés, medieval charm)
  • Glavni Trg (Main Square) with its baroque architecture
Day 2 - Cycling from Maribor to Rogla

Into the Wild: Riding the Forest Trails of Pohorje!

On our second day, we leave Maribor behind and head straight into the embrace of Pohorje — a vast mountain plateau known for its deep spruce forests, quiet gravel roads, alpine meadows, and one of the last primeval forests in Europe.

The climb up Mariborsko Pohorje begins right at the city’s edge, but with every meter we gain, the noise fades and the scent of spruce takes over.

Our ride then leads us toward Šumikov summit, where we pass beneath the towering canopy of a protected primeval forest. We cross the ridge toward Klopni Summit and enjoy a flowing stretch of gravel all the way to Koča na Pesku, a beloved mountain hut sitting between the eastern and western parts of Pohorje.

The final part of the day brings us up to Rogla, a well-known ski resort perched high above the forests — the perfect place to end the stage.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Mariborski razglednik (Lookout Tower) at km 16.6
  • Koča na Pesku at km 42.3 — a classic mountain hut serving excellent local Slovenian dishes.
  • Rogla Treetop Walk at km 45.6 — an elevated wooden walkway through the forest canopy, ending at a stunning 37-meter observation tower.

From there, the path winds past a small hidden lake tucked between spruce trees before climbing to Planinska koča Pesnik — one of the most idyllic mountain spots on the western side of Pohorje.

From Pesnik, the real gravel fun begins. We traverse toward Kope, a beloved Slovenian ski resort known for its wide open views and a beautiful ridgeline that stretches toward the Koroška region. The day becomes playful as we hop from one scenic highpoint to another — including the panoramic Knezarjev Summit and Škobirjev Summit, both offering sweeping forest and mountain views.

Into the Alpine Wonderland!

We start Day 4 in the quiet village of Črna na Koroškem, climbing along forest roads toward the slopes beneath Kneževa Špica, where expansive mountain views open in every direction. From here, we roll toward Podolševa, a scenic high plateau dotted with isolated farmhouses and sweeping vistas.

This area is not only beautiful — it’s ancient. Nearby archaeologists discovered remains from the Stone Age, including cave bear skeletons and tools dating back more than 30,000 years.

We continue onto the famous Solčava Scenic Route, one of the most breathtaking panoramic roads in Slovenia. As we ride along this ridge, the horizon bursts open with massive alpine peaks towering in the distance — a landscape that feels both dramatic and peaceful at the same time.

Next, we traverse toward Matkov kot, one of the most untouched, remote, and pristine valleys. From there, the route gently leads us to the entrance of magnificent Logarska Valley, a glacial masterpiece framed by steep limestone walls and towering mountains.

We finish the stage riding to the foot of the Rinka Waterfall, a spectacular 90-meter cascade tucked beneath the cliffs. A short descent brings us to Hotel Plesnik, one of the most idyllic and scenic hideaways in the region — the kind of place where you’ll want to sit outside and just stare at the view for hours.

From here, we follow a gentle downhill through Solčava and Luče before turning into the Podvolovjek Valley — the natural gateway between the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and the high plateaus rising above.

This is where our loop toward Velika Planina begins — one of Slovenia’s most iconic alpine pastures and home to the largest shepherd settlement in Europe.

Gravel roads lead us through truly magical scenery: wide mountain meadows, traditional wooden herdsmen’s huts, and sweeping views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It’s one of the most photogenic and culturally unique landscapes anywhere in the country.

Day 7 - Cycling from Jezersko to Tržič

Mountain Huts, Big Views & a Sweet Reward!

We begin Day 7 surrounded by the towering peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, which we now slowly leave behind. After a quick warm-up, the gravel and road tilt sharply upward — the climb toward Pečovnik mountain begins. As we switchback higher, we enjoy our final sweeping views of the Kamnik–Savinja range before officially entering a new mountain world: the Karavanke.

⚠️ Note: Between km 9.2 and 10, you’ll encounter the only section on the entire trip where you may need to hop off the bike and hike for a short stretch.

From here the route rolls gently up and down past the Šija Scout Lodge, before entering one of the most scenic segments of the day: the climb to Dom na Kofcah, one of Slovenia’s most iconic mountain huts tucked beneath the Košuta ridgeline.

A stop here is mandatory — not just for the jaw-dropping views, but for their famous štruklji, traditional Slovenian sweet dumplings served in an incredible variety of flavors. This is a true highlight of the entire trip.

From Kofce, we enjoy a long, flowing descent all the way into the valley, finishing in the dramatic Dovžanova Gorge, where you can cool your legs in the crystal-clear Tržaška Bistrica River — with rock formations dating back more than 300 million years. The stage ends in the mountain town of Tržič.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Dom na Kofcah (km 32) Legendary mountain hut with unforgettable views — and even better dumplings!

Day 8 - Cycling from Tržič to Lake Bohinj

Iconic Lakes: Bled and Bohinj!

We begin Day 8 in Tržič, spinning through a few warm-up miles before heading toward Podljubelj, where the pavement slowly gives way to forest roads leading deep into the Karavanke Mountains.

The climb toward Planina Prevala begins here, opening up wide views toward the Košuta ridgeline. From Prevala, we continue across to the Planinica Mountain Hut, before dropping into a long descent that delivers us straight into Begunje na Gorenjskem. The hometown of Slavko Avsenik, the legendary Slovenian musician whose band helped bring Alpine folk music to international fame.

A flat and easy section through Lesce leads us toward one of Slovenia’s greatest icons: Lake Bled. Famous for its island church, cliffside castle, and the legendary kremšnita cream cake, Bled is a must-see stop and one of the most photographed places in the country.

Day 9 - Cycling from Lake Bohinj to Kranjska Gora

Get your cameras ready!

We begin Day 9 along the peaceful shores of Lake Bohinj, warming up as we ride toward the village of Srednja vas. From here, the climb to Uskovnica begins — one of Slovenia’s most beautiful alpine pastures, surrounded by open meadows, traditional wooden shepherd huts, and wide views of the surrounding peaks. The gravel rises gently and leads us onto the high plateau of Pokljuka, where we reach Rudno Polje, the national center of Nordic skiing and biathlon.

From Rudno Polje, the ride continues through the endless spruce forests of Pokljuka before descending toward the alpine village of Mojstrana. Here, riders have a special option: Those looking for an extra challenge can extend the stage by riding into Vrata Valley, a dramatic glacial valley that leads directly beneath the towering north face of Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak.

Day 10 - Cycling from Kranjska Gora to Bovec

The Crown Jewel of the Alps!

We begin Day 10 in Kranjska Gora, and what lies ahead is without question one of the most spectacular days of the entire journey. We start by rolling past the crystal-clear waters of Lake Jasna, before turning onto the climb toward Vršič Pass — the highest alpine pass in Slovenia.

Instead of riding the main road, we take the historic parallel gravel ascent, a quiet and beautifully rugged route that winds through forests and steep mountain slopes far from any traffic. As we gain altitude, the views of the Julian Alps become increasingly dramatic, revealing some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. We reach the pass at 1,680 meters, a true milestone of the trip.

From the top, a long and scenic descent leads us into Trenta Valley, where the world suddenly shifts into brilliant shades of emerald. Here flows the legendary Soča River, famous for its unreal blue-green color. Once we reach its banks, we follow the gentle rhythm of the river all the way to the alpine village of Bovec.

Along the way, make sure to stop at the Velika Korita, one of the most impressive natural wonders of the Soča. These are deep, narrow turquoise gorges carved by the river — a stunning reminder of nature’s power and beauty.

Day 11 - Cycling from Bovec to Solkan

Following the emerald river!

We begin Day 11 in Bovec, following the Soča River downstream as its signature emerald color guides us through much of the day. The gravel tracks above the river offer unforgettable views, leading us toward the historic Napoleon Bridge near Kobarid — a perfect spot for a break and a photo.

From here, we continue along quiet side roads toward Tolmin, where the crystal-clear Tolminka River joins the Soča. The confluence is one of those rare places that truly takes your breath away — a stunning blend of colors, nature, and alpine tranquility.

Beyond Tolmin, the landscape slowly shifts from alpine to Mediterranean. The air warms, the vegetation changes, and the mountains soften into rolling hills. One final climb brings us to a panoramic ridge before we descend into Solkan, where today’s stage ends at the gateway to the wine country and the warmer climate of the southwest.

⭐ Today’s Must-See Highlights

  • Soča River (km 7) Ride above one of the most stunning rivers in Europe, known for its unreal emerald color.

Day 12 - Cycling from Solkan to Matavun

Into the Karst Kingdom!

We begin Day 12 in Nova Gorica, rolling over gravel and quiet country lanes through endless vineyards as the landscape shifts into the true Karst region. Our first cultural stop of the day is Rihemberk Castle, a medieval fortress perched above the valley.

From here, a steady climb brings us to the stunning hilltop town of Štanjel, one of the oldest settlements in the Karst. Its stone streets, fortified walls, and the beautiful Ferrari Garden create a perfect blend of history, architecture, and Mediterranean charm.

The final 25 kilometers lead us toward one of Slovenia’s greatest natural wonders the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are not ordinary caves: They contain one of the largest underground canyons in the world, with chambers reaching up to 150 meters (490 ft) high and massive spaces so vast they feel like underground cathedrals. If you choose to take the tour, prepare to be blown away by the sheer scale and the roaring Reka River deep below.

This is a spectacular ending to a day that connects wine, history, and the raw power of nature.

From here, the route becomes a beautiful mix of gravel tracks weaving through pine forests, rocky plateaus, and open ridgelines with ever-widening views of the coastline.

A quick crossing into Italy adds an international flavor to the day, and then — finally — it’s time to drop toward the Adriatic!

The final kilometers are a true celebration. We ride along the seaside cycle path past Koper, continue through the charming streets of Izola, climb over the scenic bluff of Strunjan, roll through the historic tunnel into Portorož, and finally arrive in Piran — one of the most stunning towns on the entire Mediterranean coast. It’s the perfect ending to a cross-country gravel adventure.
